who in the world reads yaoi?

women of the world love yaoi

My favorite box on the WordPress stats page is the flags list — the hits on your site by country. Since my site’s all about stories of boys who fall in love and boys who have sex with each other — a rather taboo topic in many parts of the world — whenever a new flag appears, I am delighted. And, I must admit, some of the flags that have popped up in this blog’s first four months have genuinely surprised me. In the best of all possible ways.

Granted, I do have some images on my site that are non-BL, and I do have a few posts that are only tangentially yaoi-related (Japanese food, Japanese itself, and two about blogging). However, most of the pages that get hits are actually yaoi pages.

In countries where English isn’t especially popular, many of the views are of images, so they probably don’t represent folks here reading, but still, they’re guys and gals aiming to look at the men of yaoi, and that’s just plain fantastic.

Thus I’m going to brush the caveats aside and share my first four months’ worth of flags with you, so you can marvel with me about the global fujoshi/fudanshi population. These flags are in order by number of hits, from a couple thousand hits in the US to one lone hit (Guatemala on down).

To all the fujoshi and fudanshi who visit these pages, let me simply say…

  1. Wow… my country is on top five but I’m not surprised… children here grow up watching anime on TV and reading manga. Some then find yaoi including me ^_ ^ But I think your country list isn’t that accurate because in some countries, there are ban on a few manga scan sites so we used other country server. Like me, everyday I browse from different country. Right now I use Japan, tomorrow it will be other country.

    • Wow. That’s really interesting. I hadn’t thought about people using other countries’ servers and how that’d skew these lists. I feel very lucky to have relatively unrestricted access to the Internet.

You know, I also wonder how many people on that chart land on this site accidentally, read for a minute, make a horrified squeak, and close their browser windows as quickly as possible. The accidental viewers…

  2. My country on top! African American fujoshi who recently meet a really wonderful, amazing, and understanding fudanshi. I’ll probably intoduce him to this site. I really like this site because you have this whole community of fujoshis and fudanshis. It’s really reassuring to know that there are so many of us out there especially when its considered “taboo” in your country. I’ll be back. Ja ne!
